Mattel is honoring Día de Muertos—also known as Day of the Dead—with the launch of three of its newest Barbie and Ken dolls. The figurines look festive in their new colorful outfits designed by Mexican-American designer Javier Meabe..
This will be the fourth iteration of the collection as the toymaker releases new versions annually.
The first doll is fitted in a vibrant purple and blue color-blocked gown which features intricate details of sugar skulls, flowers, and skeletons. Bright pink roses and ribbons adorn her hair.
Next up, we have Ken dressed in a charro outfit. A blue shirt and a detailed waistcoat have been chosen for him, all embellished with flowers and sugar skulls to match Barbie. He also sports a gold-trimmed sombrero.
The last doll will be part of the Barbie Signature line and was made in tandem with Benito Santos in the collection and was designed with Mariachi bands in mind.
The top half of her outfit is in the style of the suits worn by the traditional musicians, and it flares out towards the bottom into a fitted mermaid-style dress. The skirt and bolero are each outfitted with red roses and silver trimming, set against the traditional black of the jacket.
Each character had their face beautifully painted in a traditional death mask. The entire collection is a homage to the Mexican culture and perfectly encapsulates the vibrant and respectful honoring of the people as they celebrate this special day.
The Barbie and Ken editions will go for US$80 each, while the Barbie Signature version retails for US$100.
