McDonald’s UK has released its touching new Christmas ad, which sees a single mother trying to get her teenage son to embrace his inner child.
The Inner Child ad, created with Leo Burnett London, tells the story of a teenager called Tom, who would rather play with gadgets than spend time with his mother.
Set to Alphaville’s Forever Young by Becky Hill, the short sees him dismissing her after she encourages him to put the Christmas decorations up. His mother brings him to a Christmas market and even puts on a pair of reindeer ears to put him into a festive mood, but the moody teenager puts his headphones on and storms off.
On the way home, they stop by McDonald’s, and that is when his “inner child” lights up. He sneaks a bag of Reindeer Treats into his pocket and joins in a snowball fight with his mother as they head into their house.
He then gets the basket of decorations and helps his mother to put them up, before leaving the saved Reindeer Treats on the fireplace for Santa’s reindeer. The ad ends with the text, “Are you reindeer ready?”
The ad shows how Christmas can reignite the kid in you, and how McDonald’s plays an important role in doing so. Vice president Michelle Graham-Clare said, “Our heart-warming tale of Tom and his mum aims to reignite the magic of Christmas across the UK and Ireland this winter. That moment as the pair reconnect over the reindeer treats, saved from their trip through the Drive Thru, represents the common truth of children determined to grow up but swept up by the festive spirit.”
“It’s been a really challenging year and I hope our contribution to the competitive Christmas campaign window raises a much-needed smile,” she added.
“Tom and his mum perfectly demonstrate the truth of the teenage / child conflict that we can all relate to, and ultimately the magic of Christmas in bringing people closer together. After all, if you can’t be ‘forever young’ at Christmas, when can you be?,” Leo Burnett’s CCO Chaka Sobhani told LBB Online.
