Some might say Thanksgiving preparations involve planning your travel time, as well. Surely each family has its own estimates, based on past experience, on when best to leave the house to visit relatives. However, it’s 2019, and fact-based data can be easily accessed to help you get to your destination no matter where you’re headed from, thanks to Google.
Based on 2018 Google Maps data, the company has unleashed a number of schedules comprising recommended and risky times to hit the road, and even when you should or should not head out to your local bakery to buy a pumpkin pie.
“No one likes cold turkey,” Google reminds in a new blog post. If you don’t want to keep Grandma waiting, avoid driving out between 3pm to 4pm on Wednesday, 27 November, the day before Thanksgiving, as Google projects it will be the busiest time for Thanksgiving travel nationwide. If you’re venturing out of New York, 3pm is also the worst travel time that day.
Nationally, the best time to start hitting the road is 6am the next morning, when traffic is expected to empty out.
If you’re getting a pie, you should do so on Tuesday, 26 November, at 7pm, Google suggests. The grocery and liquor stores are expected to be at their emptiest at 9pm and 10pm respectively on Tuesday.
When you return home from Thanksgiving festivities, the optimal nationwide time to head out is by 6am on Sunday.
