It’s clear whose vote Mike Bloomberg wants to get for the 2020 election. The presidential candidate’s team engaged influencer marketing agencies to further his election bid, and what has come out of it is an unusual meme-centered campaign.
Popular Instagram meme accounts like @fuckjerry and @kalesalad are posting what appear to be Instagram DM exchanges between them and Bloomberg.
Bloomberg is depicted to be asking the account owners to help him post memes to make him seem like a “cool candidate.” In one version, he even claims to have picked up Photoshop because creators weren’t responding to his request soon enough so “I learned how to make memes myself.”
The posts all come with a disclaimer: “Yes, this is really sponsored by @mikebloomberg.”
Senior national spokesperson of the campaign, Sabrina Singh, told CNBC, “While a meme strategy may be new to presidential politics, we’re betting it will be an effective component to reach people where they are and compete with President Trump’s powerful digital operation.”
