The cofounder of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, had some things to say about people who refer to animals as “pets.” Although the word is used by the masses, Newkirk told Metro.co.uk that “pet” was “derogatory.”
The 70-year-old likened the word “pet” to how one would call a woman “sweetie” or “honey.” She then detailed that she believes animals are not “pets” as they are not “ours” to begin with.
Newkirk described that a pet is often seen as a commodity even though it is a living thing that should be treated no less than humans.
According to her, the language used on the animal directly reflects the way one views it. Hence, she is encouraging everyone to work on how to communicate with animals.
In the past, PETA called for the term “pet owner” to be replaced with “human carer” or “guardian,” as the organization insisted domestic animals should be seen as equal to humans.

She may be the president and founder of PETA, but Ingrid Newkirk didn’t always view animals the way she does now. In an eye-opening interview with @kk.ottesen from The @washingtonpost she described her realization that animals are more like us than we give them credit for. “They love. They feel joy. They feel fear. The whole thing. And it was a revelation to me. I felt so stupid that I had never thought of this. I thought: My god, that's what I believe inside me. They're not like us. They are us.” Ingrid wrote her new book #animalkind to show all of the ways that animals are unique, intelligent, and feeling individuals, who aren’t so different from humans. It’s never too late to change your relationship with animals and give them the respect they deserve.
