Nike was pushed to cancel its 4 July sneakers following disdain by streetwear fans and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The design, which was inspired by the Betsy Ross flag, was criticized for its purported association with slavery. Donald Trump Jr has since mocked Nike’s decision to remove the sneakers, likening the company to communists.
The son of President Donald Trump promptly took to Twitter to share a remixed version of Nike footwear, with the brand’s iconic swoosh photoshopped to look like the Soviet Union’s hammer and sickle flag.
Nike’s original ‘Fourth of July Air Max 1’ featured Betsy Ross’ original American flag on its heel. The design was slated for release on Monday to celebrate Independence Day, and was priced at US$140. However, it was quickly lambasted because the flag was flown during the country’s era of slavery.
“If the Betsy Ross Flag, the flag of the American Revolution, is too offensive for Nike to commemorate the Fourth of July, maybe Nike should go with this,” Donald Trump Jr tweeted. “Seems to be more in line with their views.”
It seems that two can play at this game, as Trump Jr was later owned by Brooklyn-based musician Bradley Bloom with an apparently more fitting design for the son of the US president: a sneaker with an image of the Ku Klux Klan hood in place of the Nike logo, along with a Swastika on its heel.
“Maybe Junior should wear these as they are more in line with his views,” he commented.
