It’s not uncommon for Hollywood stars to show off some skin at red carpet events, but in certain parts of the world, some celebrities, such as Egyptian actress Rania Youssef, aren’t quite as lucky.
Youssef, 44, had incurred the wrath of many locals after stepping out in a thigh-baring outfit at the Cairo Film Festival.
The black see-through dress particularly irked some of the nation’s lawyers, who accused her of “inciting temptation and debauchery.” Two of the attorneys who were vocal of her appearance included Amro Abdelsalam and Samir Sabri, who have a track record for taking celebrities to court.
Sabri told AFP that Youssef’s getup “did not meet societal values, traditions and morals,” and thus “undermined” the reputation of females in Egypt, a largely conservative country that values modesty in women.
A judicial source also told AFP that the actress could face up to five years in jail if found guilty.
Without naming Youssef, the Egyptian Actors’ Syndicate remarked, “some of the festival’s guests did not agree with the traditions and values of the society,” adding that the festival’s repute had been tainted by the supposed indecency.
Some fans might stick up for the actress, but she has seen the other side of the coin, and has thus apologized for apparently inciting “so much anger.”
In an Instagram post, Youssef wrote that she had “probably miscalculated” her decision to don the laced dress at the event.
“It was the first time that I wore it, and I did not realize it would spark so much anger… I reaffirm my commitment to the values upon which we were raised in Egyptian society.”
The backlash resulting from Youssef’s outfit is reminiscent of the controversy involving Egyptian pop star Shaimaa Ahmed, who was censured for suggestively eating a banana in her underwear for a music video.
