Banksy’s shredding stunt at auction house Sotheby’s garnered worldwide attention after the anonymous British street artist’s Girl with Balloon print passed through a concealed shredder inside its frame.
Designers and brands were quick to join the commotion by following in Banksy’s footsteps through promotional materials, including McDonald’s.
Now, Fab Lab Irbid has created a step-by-step guide for engineers and artists to create their very own self-shredding picture frame. The fabrication lab explained inside its Instructables guide, “When the Balloon Girl self-shredded itself after hitting 1.4 million dollars, our inner makers started analyzing how it [was] done.”
The company explained its theory behind Banksy’s shredded mechanism, “[The] blades were fixed on the base of the frame and two wheels held the painting in place and when they turned[,] the painting would move over the blades and shred itself.”
Fab Lab Irbid carried out the experiment, as shown inside the video below. If you wish to try it out yourself, the website comes with an instruction guide to ensure you’re on the right track.
