Studio Ghibli Alumni Debuts Trailer For Not One, But Three New Animations
By Yoon Sann Wong, 10 Jul 2018
Last year, Studio Ponoc—established by ex-Studio Ghibli producer Yoshiaki Nishimura and director Hiromasa Yonebayashi—made headlines for its debut Japanese animation titled Mary and The Witch’s Flower.
The studio is now gearing up to release not one, but three short animations, which it has teased in a recently released two-minute trailer.
Ponoc Short Films Theaters, Vol 1. — Modest Heroes comprises Kanini & Kanino, Life Ain’t Gonna Lose, and Invisible.
Kanini & Kanino, which features a mix of CGI and traditional animation techniques, tells the tale of two crab brothers who journey underwater in search of their missing father.
Life Ain’t Gonna Lose transforms a simple plot about an energetic child named ‘Shun’ whose serious allergy to eggs gets in his way in life, into a lesson about how anyone, despite his or her weaknesses, can become a hero.
Invisible takes on a vastly different, metaphorical tone through the main character who feels unseen in his urban environment. As such, he’s illustrated without a body and only as hovering clothes. Viewers follow his struggle to gain the confidence to be seen.
The release dates for the short films have yet to be announced so stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, fans of Japanese anime might be glad to hear that the creator of award-winning Your Name film is also returning with an anticipated original Netflix animated series.
