A bronze statue at Madeira Airport supposedly depicting Cristiano Ronaldo went viral last year for the wrong reasons. Emaneul Santos, the distraught artist who sculpted it, was finally given a second chance to redeem himself—and he truly did.
The bust was eventually replaced last week at the request of the soccer star’s family via the CR7 Museum in Madeira, but it’s a pity it wasn’t swapped with Santos’ improved model, as the current version has also become a subject of ridicule.
Passersby and internet users have pointed out how the new bronze bust hardly resembles Cristiano Ronaldo. Even more surprisingly, many want the old meme-worthy statue back, and a petition has been launched to have it retrieved.
“The bust has become an attraction for our island today, and we cannot accept its replacement,” the appeal reads.
While the previous statue is nowhere to be seen at the airport, Duarte Ferreira, director at Madeira Airport, promises it’s still around. He tells Madeira Island News, “The museum asked us to replace and put this bust in honor of the athlete, and we thought we should change, but in any case, we have the old one saved.”

So @Cristiano’s family replaced the beloved bust in the airport for a new one slightly more dignified but definitely not as interesting and even less similar to CR7. I can’t imagine people lining up to take a selfie with this bore of a statue. #bringhimback pic.twitter.com/mtHXj9pGtu— marcio barcelos (@marciobarcelos) June 17, 2018

This new bust could be anyone and is a little bit soulless. pic.twitter.com/eyTWiGQZsr
