Anthony Bourdain is known to never skip a good meal.
Therefore, red flags were raised when Bourdain did not show up at a rustic French dinner on Thursday night.
According to The New York Times, waiter at restaurant Le Chambard Mixime Voinson “thought it was strange,” recalling Bourdain’s disappearance the night before his suicide.
Renowned French chef Eric Ripert too thought it was not Bourdain to pass down a good meal, only to find out his close friend has hanged himself in the bathroom the next morning.
Bourdain, together with Ripert and the CNN crew, travelled to a village called Kayserberg in northeastern France to shoot an episode featuring Alsatian food. Bourdain and Ripert would usually dine at Le Chambard hotel together with an executive chef at Le Bernadin, Monsieur Nasti.
Bourdain would usually eat breakfast with Ripert every morning, however Bourdain did not show up on Friday morning. A waiter said that Bourdain’s friend, referring to Ripert, was waiting for him at the breakfast table, and Bourdain’s camera crew was waiting for him down the road.
Bourdain’s crew was set to film at an outdoor market at 10am. However, Bourdain wasn’t picking up his phone calls at 9.30am.
Ripert, with the help of the hotel receptionist unlocked Bourdain’s hotel room and found him “unresponsive.” Bourdain had hanged himself in the bathroom with the use of a belt.
According to local prosecutor Christian de Rocquigny, there is no other violence found on Bourdain’s body, stating that there is no foul play was involved.
Rocquigny also said that there is no evidence of alcohol consumption and it might be an “impulsive act.”
