When there’s a will, there’s a way; for photographers who know how to improvise and make the best of any situation, no “ugly” location is an unconquerable hurdle.
The ‘Ugly Location’ challenge—well known within the photographic community—has given rise to some impressive results. Joining this list are images from 22-year-old photographer Kelsey Maggart.
“I live in a really tiny town. If you want to be a photographer here, you have to make use of ugly locations,” she explained to Ottawa Citizen.
From Target to gas stations, Maggart proves that with creativity and help, a seemingly “hideous” backdrop can be wholly transformed. One of her most popular set of photographs was taken at arts and crafts store Hobby Lobby.
She shared the behind-the-scenes, pictured above, through her Twitter, revealing how she managed to achieve the final photo with a little help from her friends.
Maggart adds that one of the perks of living in a small town is everyone knows one another. As a result, she’s never been questioned about shooting photos on private property.
“When we went to Hobby Lobby, there were probably four or five workers. We went at 7:30 and they close at 8. Nobody said anything to us,” the photographer explained. “I think when people see me, they can just assume I’m doing a photoshoot.”
“I’ve had photographers message me saying they also live in a small town and they don’t have good spots to go to, so they quit taking photos. After showing some of mine, they told me I inspired them to just go out and do it.”
