While many people, including celebrities The Weeknd, Lebron James, T.I. and Azalea Banks, were outraged that a young black boy modeled a H&M hoodie with the words “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle,” the mother of the boy has expressed otherwise.
Terry Mango made her address via Facebook, essentially telling everyone to stop bringing the matter to her doorstep.
Mango responded, “That’s my son... I’ve been to all photo shoots and this was no an exception.”
She added, “This is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modeled... stop crying Wolf all the time, unnecessary issue.”
Though some people were disappointed in her response, she replied by saying, “I really don’t understand but not coz am not choosing not to, but because it’s not my way of thinking, sorry.”
She believes that “everyone is entitled to their opinion about this.”
H&M has apologized for and removed the catalog photo, which led to The Weeknd and G-Eazy severing ties with the Swedish retail brand.
The mother of the young boy wearing the “monkey” sweater has come forward to respond to everyone defending her son, she says stfu and stop being so damn sensitive 😅 At this point, I’m now over it 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ But in her defense, by the way she says “she’s his mum” tells me they are from another country, maybe she doesn’t completely understand our racial stereotypes in America....??🤔😳 #TeaTENDERS

It's a shame the mother doesn't see an issue with this, but that's life.— Mak Calixte (@Return_Of_DaMak) January 9, 2018

Stop using this child as your poster boy for racism his mother who you all now want to attack her is black if she has no problem with it then why do you I have to say #TerryMango is right to not be looking for crap when there is none— Amy VanZandt (@AmyEVanZandt) January 11, 2018
#TerryMango the mom of the boy is okay with her son to wear offensive monkey slogan. That is okay, the problem is it affects over 1.3 Billion black people. So it’s okay in her house but not outside her house. Financially it makes sense to her but it’s socially & politcally wrong https://t.co/2zC8kZCLm3— EdKEdris (@edkedris) January 10, 2018
This is how sleep some people are, she just sat there and let them use her child and not question the validity of the depiction. All she saw were those dollar signs $$ 👀 💰. #TerryMango pic.twitter.com/mevbftE7dI— Mister Ceasar (@mrceasar) January 10, 2018
