Birkenstock Goes From Pedestrian To High Fashion With Designer Pony Hair Sandals
By Yoon Sann Wong, 10 Jan 2018
German footwear brand Birkenstock, which has become a comfortable staple in many people’s lives, is collaborating with American designer Rick Owens for its mobile pop-up project ‘The Box’.
This pop-up space has traveled to various locations around the globe, enabling the brand to work with specific retailers. Examples include Berlin with Andreas Murkudis, New York City with Barneys and Whitney Museum, and Milan with 10 Corso Como.
For this edition, Owens reinterprets three of the brand’s classic styles in four different finishes, including pony hair, felt, and full-grain leather. This collaboration marks the first for Birkenstock in its invitation to an individual designer.
The footwear will be available for pre-order come 1 March, and for purchase via Birkenstock and Owens’ online channels from 15 March.
‘The Box’ will make itself at home outside Owens’ LA store on La Brea Avenue on 16 March, where other styles from Birkenstock’s main line, as well as ready-to-wear, furniture, and accessories by Owens will be included.
